- Prep the bread: Dry the bread slices in the oven at 200°F for 10 minutes. This helps the bread soak up the custard without becoming mushy.
- Mix the base: In a bowl, thoroughly dissolve the sugar, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg into the eggs and melted butter.
- Combine: Whisk in the milk and the vanilla and almond extracts.
- Soak: Soak each slice of bread for 10–15 seconds per side, turning until the bread is fully saturated.
- Cook: Heat a pan with butter over medium heat. Fry the slices until golden. While frying, sprinkle each side with a little extra sugar to create a caramelized crust.
French Toast
4 3/4” slices of white bread (try Kroger Texas toast)
3 eggs
2+ tbsp sugar
1 cup whole milk (half & half better)
1 tbsp melted butter
1.5 tsp vanilla
3/4 tsp almond
1/4 tsp Cinnamon
1/8 tsp Nutmeg
1/2 tsp salt
- Dry bread at 200° for 10 minute. Dissolve sugar, salt, & spices in eggs and butter. Add milk & extracts. Soak bread for 10-15 seconds on both sides, turning until saturated. Sprinkle each side with sugar while pan frying in butter over medium heat.
